Texas Tech Fires Pat Knight

facebooktwitterreddit

We just finished talking about Jim Les’ firing at Bradley. And now, there’s more coaching news in the college basketball world, as Pat Knight is officially out as coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Per the worldwide leader:

"I felt like it was time to make a change within our men’s basketball program,” Texas Tech president Guy Bailey said in a statement. “I appreciate everything Pat has done for our university, not only as a head coach, but also throughout his career as an assistant. I wish him success and the best moving forward.”"

Most people saw this coming as it was just a matter of when it would happen. Texas Tech only had one winning season under Knight, and that was last year when they reached the NIT quarterfinals.

When Bob Knight stepped down several years ago, I’m not sure that I thought Pat would be there this long. It just seemed like a difficult situation for him, and it’s probably best for both parties that they break ties and head in another direction. Texas Tech isn’t an easy place to win in basketball, so it’s probably best that he try his luck elsewhere.

And let’s be honest. He’s only 40 years old, so he’ll land another gig very soon. He’s learned from one of the best and he’ll get another opportunity at the college level without a doubt.
