Gregg Marshall Staying at Wichita State, N.C. State Still Looking

And we’ve not another potential N.C. State candidate staying at his current position, as Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall will reportedly sign an extension to stay at the school, according to ESPN’s Rece Davis.

As Marshall states in the story, he’s clearly happy and Wichita State, and with the group that he has coming back next year, he could have another huge season.

The Shockers won 29 games this season, which is a school record, and capped it off with an NIT championship. And again, if you take a look at next year’s roster, this could be a pretty special team next season.

So in that respect, would it be a reach to say that Wichita State is a better job than N.C. State right now? It seems pretty clear that N.C. State probably made a move to try and get Marshall, but yet he felt like it was in his best interest to stay at Wichita State.

The fact of the matter is, better jobs will come available. N.C. State and Miami, given the current states of their programs, do not feel like power conference jobs. Not saying that a coach can’t come in and build something special there, but both teams are facing an uphill climb in the ACC. They’ve got a lot of work to do.

We all thought Marshall would be in play for the Missouri job, which was quickly filled by Frank Haith after Matt Painter said no. So once we learned that, it seemed unlikely that Marshall or Shaka Smart would make a move this season.

And while Marshall is said to be signing an extension, there’s no doubt that his name will come up when other jobs open next year.

Maybe we can’t put him in the company of Smart or Brad Stevens just yet, but there’s no question that he’s one of the best coaches on the mid-major circuit right now, and it will be a hot commodity if the Shockers have another big season.

So for N.C. State, the search continues.
