St. John’s Head Coach Steve Lavin Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

It’s time to take a step back from the usual on-court talk here on the site and discuss something much more important.

St. John’s announced today that head coach Steve Lavin has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will begin treatment soon to combat the problem.

Now, the good news on this is that doctors caught this issue last fall, and once the treatments are complete, they expect Lavin to make a fully recovery. But still, anytime we hear the word “cancer,” it certainly makes you step back and look at things a little differently.

Again, it’s just so great that doctors spotted this early on, as unfortunately, not everyone does get the news in the early stages of the cancer, and they face a long and hard road to recovery.

It sort of puts everything in perspective in terms of remembering that this is just a game. Matters like this are much more important in the grand scheme of things.

I’ve always thought Lavin was a very good coach and hopefully this doesn’t affect him to the point to where he can’t continue to do what he loves. Luckily, it doesn’t sound like this will stop him from doing his job, so that’s fantastic news.

He did a great job with the Red Storm this season, as St. John’s had to be considered the biggest surprise in the Big East this year.

All of us here at Busting Brackets send our thoughts and prayers out to Coach Lavin and hope he makes a speedy and complete recovery.
