Maryland to Name Hoops Court After Gary Williams

facebooktwitterreddit

In what should come as no shock to anyone, Maryland has announced that they will be naming their court after Gary Williams, who retired back in May.

Again, file this under the “not-so breaking news” category. The man is the winningest coach in Maryland history, and certainly deserves an honor such as this one.

Even if you aren’t a Terrapin fan, the one thing that always stood out with Williams was his passion and energy on the sidelines. It was a lot of fun to watch him coach his team, and obviously, it was great to see him coach his 2002 team to the national title.

I wasn’t sure if Maryland would get this done this quick, but I’m glad to see that they did. Because a season without Gary Williams there in some capacity (yes, I know it’s just his name on a court, but still…) simply wouldn’t feel right at all. I’m not a Maryland fan, but he’s still always been one of my favorite coaches.

Congrats to Williams for this honor, and hopefully we’ll see him back in college basketball in some type of role very soon.
