Conference Expansion: Missouri to the SEC Might Be a Done Deal

facebooktwitterreddit

The conference expansion train slowed down for a little bit, but now it looks as though things might be heating up once again.

Pete Thamel of the New York Times is reporting that Missouri’s move to the SEC could now be inevitable.

Is this shocking news? Not really. The Missouri to the SEC rumors have been going on for quite a while now. I’m still not exactly sure that this move makes sense for both parties, but hey, moving conferences is what’s cool these days.

We knew that the SEC wasn’t going to stay at 13 teams. Another school was going to be added no matter what.

But is Missouri the school that made the most sense? Stealing a school from the ACC would have made more sense in the grand scheme of things, however, with the ACC increasing its buyout, there were clearly going to be some bumps in the road for that to happen.

So maybe we can just chalk this down as a rushed move by Mike Slive and company.

Again, scheduling-wise, staying at 13 was going to be tough. All along, it did seem like a 14th school was going to be added sooner rather than later. But with all the flip-flopping that was taking place, no one was one hundred percent sure that Missouri was going to be that school.

Football-wise, this is gonna a tough adjustment. Basketball-wise, it won’t be as bad, but Frank Haith still has his work cut out for him in terms of recruiting against the likes of John Calipari and Billy Donovan.

If this move does indeed go down, the dominoes will once again start to fall in the conference expansion race.
