There’s one more big game set to take place tonight in the world of college basketball, and this rivalry game should have some spice to it.
Kansas, who has quietly moved up to number five in the most recent poll, visits Manhattan to take on Kansas State in what should be an excellent game between two teams who don’t particular care for each other.
Are either one of us picking the upset? Let’s find out:
#5 Kansas at Kansas State – 9 PM ET, ESPN
Jamal Murphy – Oh, you thought and hoped “Rivalry Week” was really just one week? I guess not. It continues tonight with a true Big 12 in-state rivalry.
Bill Self and Kansas visit Manhattan looking quite formidable and are even eyeing a possible #1 seed in the big dance. But the Jayhawks were tripped up on the road a few weeks ago at Iowa State and tonight’s game poses the same type of pitfalls for KU.
Francisco Martín, or Frank Martin as he is affectionately known, always has his team ready to play, particularly at home in the Octagon of Doom. This is also a huge game for the Wildcats in terms of NCAA Tournament ramifications, as they are trending fast towards the bubble and a win versus a top 10 team would be just the stopgap remedy they are looking for.
The thing with an overachieving club, such as Kansas, is that they can be picked off by a so-called lesser opponent even if they are just a bit off their game. Look for that to happen tonight. An amped Frank Martin, Wildcat team, and Octagon of Doom, will be a bit too much for the Jayhawks on this night.
Prediction: Kansas State 71, Kansas 69
Blake Lovell – Ohhhhh. So my partner is picking the upset, huh? Well let me go ahead and say that I’m not. That’s right. I strongly feel that Kansas is going to go in tonight and take it to Kansas State.
I’ll be the first to say that I was wrong about the Jayhawks. I didn’t pick them to win the Big 12, but they are in prime position to do just that. But in order for that to happen, they can’t afford to drop this game tonight against Martin’s squad.
It’s never easy to go in there and win. We all know that. But I don’t think this K State packs the same punch that they’ve had in recent years. The Jayhawks get the job done in Manhattan.
Prediction: Kansas 73, Kansas State 65
