College Basketball: AP Voters Divided on New No. 1, Louisville Takes Spot

Duke’s four-week reign atop the AP Poll has come to a close while Louisville’s has just begun.

The Cardinals, whose only loss this season came to the Blue Devils in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, are college basketball’s new No. 1 according to the writers. The Big East school received 36 of the 65 available first-place votes. Duke, which lost to N.C. State over the weekend in Raleigh, dipped to No. 3.

Five different schools received first-place votes, marking the widest divide among voters this late in the season since the poll was founded. Indiana, the new No. 2, received 13 first-place votes while Duke, despite losing, preserved 14 of its own. Fourth-ranked Kansas nabbed one first-place vote and Michigan, which fell from second to fifth following its loss to Ohio State on Sunday, kept one as well.

Syracuse (No. 6), Arizona (No. 7), Gonzaga (No. 8), Minnesota (No. 9) and Florida (No. 10) round out the Top 10. The Wildcats, one of four unbeatens to fall last week, slipped from fourth to seventh thanks to their road loss to Oregon. The Golden Gophers remain in the Top 10, dropping just one spot, despite falling short in their comeback bid at Indiana over the weekend. Florida climbs back into the Top 10 for the first time in four weeks, replacing No. 17 Missouri. The Tigers lost by 15 to Ole Miss.

Georgetown (No. 19), Cincinnati (No. 21), Wichita State (No. 23) and UNLV (No. 24) all slid out of the poll. The Bearcats are out of the Top 25 for the first time this season. Illinois hangs on at No. 23, dropped 11 spots from No. 12 after losing twice in the week.

Oregon (No. 21), Virginia Commonwealth (No. 22) and Marquette (No. 25) join the rankings for the first time in 2012-13. UCLA (No. 24) returns to the poll after an eight-week absence.
