Kevin Ware: A Story of Perseverance

Yesterday, Kevin Ware posted a video of himself on instagram of him back on the basketball court. Obviously he still has a distance to go to get to a point where he is able to come back and play but this is a wonderful sign.

Ware’s injury is truly the most unfortunate and disheartening injury I have ever had the displeasure of watching. Here was a young man with loads of potential and love for the game that was going down in a gruesome, and potentially career ending way. A lot of people would have gotten down on themselves in such a moment and fell into something of a depression.

That didn’t happen with Kevin Ware though. As he was being carted off the court, all he cared about was making sure his teammates won the game. Here was this kid whose bone had just popped out of his knee and his first concern was for his team. That was legitimately incredible.

The news that came out almost immediately about Ware was the he was very optimistic. He was joking around, getting updates on his team and just refusing to feel down on himself. He very quickly got himself back to walking with crutches and promised to himself and to the world that he would be back on the court next year.

It certainly seems like he has done everything in his power to make sure that happens. He is getting around without any help from crutches, he is rehabbing his knee and as seen in the video, he is even taking the court and shooting around. The kind of perseverance that Ware is displaying is way beyond what most people in his situation could show. He has the heart of a warrior and he has backed up everything he has said since injuring himself.

Hopefully Ware can find himself back in playing shape sometime over the course of a season, I am sure that he will eventually find his way back onto the court and when he does, the ovation he will receive will be unlike many others we have seen as sports fans.
