Yesterday we reported the news that the NCAA was looking into a link between North Carolina’s PJ Hairston and NBA agent Rodney Blackstock. Today, NBC’s College Basketball Talk is reporting that UNC has confirmed they have communicated with the NCAA about this situation.
“We’ve been aware of the McLemore-Blackstock case since May 4,” said Bubba Cunningham, UNC’s Athletic Director. “And we’ve been doing research and finding as much information about that situation as we can to ensure that we don’t have any issues associated with that.”
It remains to be seen whether or not UNC will have a deeper involvement in this situation but it is certainly press that they did not want. There has been growing resentment towards the administration in recent years with their handling of issues such as this.
Between Hairston’s current legal issues and this new NCAA probe, the Tar Heels have to be thinking that Hairston is more trouble than he is worth. The bottom line is that he is still on their roster and they will have to make a decision on how to proceed with him.
Whether or not Hairston comes out clean from this investigation, the allegations have already hurt his reputation as well as UNC’s, their best hope to bounce back from this is to put together a good season. No matter how angry their fans might be at the moment, a deep tournament run will make all the bad things go away. At least for the team. For Hairston, it will be a lot harder to bounce back from this issue, especially combined with the arrest from earlier in June that is still looming over his shoulder.
Busting Brackets will keep you up to date on the situation as more information comes flowing through.
