Time for another update in what has quickly become the most dramatic saga of the summer, the PJ Hairston situation. As per USA Today, we are now aware of who had rented the car that Hairston was driving when he was pulled over and subsequently arrested for marijuana possession.
The man’s name is Haydn Thomas, a 39 year old from Durham. Thomas was not in the vehicle at the time of the arrest and said he had lent it to a friend, Miykael Faulcon who was in the car with Hairston.
“I don’t know P.J. Hairston,” Thomas said. “I know Miykael, his friend. I don’t know anyone at Carolina. I don’t even like the Carolina team. Look at the age disparity between me and those boys. I could be their father.”
He’s right, he could be their fathers, which makes it weirder that Thomas later goes on to say in the article that he knew Faulcon from partying with him at clubs. Though it does not seem like Thomas had any involvement with the situation other than lending his rented car, he does seem like sketchy company and someone Hairston might want to steer clear of.
The good news in all of this is that this is essentially not important to the case. The car wasn’t rented by a UNC booster (or even worse, Rodney Blackstock) and the NCAA won’t have reason to look into something else related to Hairston’s personal life. They are already fairly involved with him at the moment and having some more stuff piled on would not have been good for Hairston.
The Tar Heels have not made any decision regarding Hairston’s future and have said that they are waiting to see how the case develops. So far, all Hairston has been charged with is possession of what is a small amount of marijuana, if nothing else comes from it, I doubt UNC does more than suspend him for a few games. If however the gun found near the car turns out to be Hairston’s, then UNC might decide to detach itself from the situation by letting Hairston go.
For now we wait for more information. We will make sure to keep you updated as more news comes out.
