The AAU summer circuit can do wonders for some players that aren’t already getting major spotlight from big schools. A good summer performance can vault a recruit’s possible landing spots to heights that could have once seemed impossible. This summer, it happened to shooting guard Robert Johnson and today, he is coming off the board.
With Isaiah Whitehead announcing his decision yesterday, it could start a chain reaction in announcements from other guards in the 2014 class. Johnson, one of the best pure shooters in the nation, is one such player who now appears to announce where he will be playing in 2014-15.
As per Zags Blog, Johnson is set to choose between Indiana, North Carolina, Virginia and Florida State. The current favorite is considered to be North Carolina, who already have point guard Joe Berry committed to the team. It is believed that Johnson would pair with Berry to form a potent back court and make UNC a strong early contender for the 2014-15 season.
While Johnson considers himself a shooting guard, a lot of teams see him more as a combo guard and would like to employ him as such. UNC is the one team that would more than likely utilize him strictly as a shooting guard. While this may suit Johnson more for the time being, he will have to get comfortable handling the ball if he wants a shot at the NBA. This is something that Johnson is aware of and acknowledges.
Of course, UNC being the favorite does not mean much in the long scheme of things. Around this time yesterday, St John’s was the favorite in the Isaiah Whitehead sweepstakes and today, they are left to pick up the pieces without their prized guard. Until Johnson makes his final announcement, all teams being considered have an equal shot at being picked.
Johnson is set to make his announcement at 3:30pm.
