One of the best recruits from the class of 2014 has gotten down to his top five schools. Power forward Cliff Alexander tweeted his top five on October 7th. The schools that made the cut were, in no order, Illinois, DePaul, Michigan State, Kansas and Memphis.
Of the five schools, DePaul is the most surprising as it is not a power school and does not usually attract top recruits like Alexander. In this case, it could be the home town discount taking effect as Alexander is a Chicago kid. If he were to ultimately choose DePaul, it would be a huge boost for the team and would give them a great recruiting edge for the rest of the 2014 class.
At the moment, there is still no clear favorite. If the rumor mill has some truth to it and Alexander wants to play with top point guard Jaquan Lyle, the likely choice would be Kansas. Both players have the school in their final list and will probably be looking for difference makers at both positions for 2014.
The one school left out from Alexander’s previous lists was Arizona. While it is unfortunate for their fans, Arizona always seemed on the outside looking in for the Alexander sweepstakes. Now that they are officially out of consideration, they can turn their full attention towards Justise Winslow. The swingman is one of the most versatile players in the 2014 class and seems to be favoring Arizona as his landing spot.
Finally, Alexander has yet to announce when he will make his decision. The word is that it will either be late in the fall season and if not then, he will wait until the 2013-14 regular season is over. Waiting until after the season won’t have much effect on Alexander’s stock. While he still has his senior year of high school left to play, Alexander is basically locked into a top five spot in his recruiting class and it would be surprising if he managed to overtake Jahlil Okafor for the top spot in the class.
