Shakeups Galore in the Newest AP Poll

After last week not having many differences at all in the AP Poll, we were introduced this week to a new AP Poll full of shakeups after a large number of teams suffered losses within the past week.  We saw top 25 matchups this week as conference play began, saw unbeatens go down, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  And it’s only week 10.

Key Points:

  • Arizona stayed in 1st place with 60 1st place votes.  Syracuse was second and received 5 1st place votes.
  • Oklahoma State fell from 6th to 11th after being upset in their Big 12 Conference opener by Kansas State.
  • The Duke Blue Devils were also not strangers to the upset bug, after falling at the hands of a decent Notre Dame team.
  • Oregon fell from the ranks of the unbeaten after losing to then-number 20 Colorado in Boulder.  That leaves only 6 undefeated teams in the NCAA.
  • Kansas suffered the defeat at Allen Fieldhouse to Steve Fisher’s San Diego State squad, snapping the Jayhawks’ 68 game non-conference home winning streak.
  • North Carolina suffered a major upset to Wake Forest, making the Tar Heels’ season even more of an enigma (as well as dropping them from the Top 25).
  • The Memphis Tigers were 18th, but were upset at the FedEx Forum by a Cincinnati team that was on the cusp of being ranked this week, receiving 9 less votes than the new No. 25, Kansas State.
  • The Connecticut Huskies also dropped from the rankings after suffering two straight losses to AAC foes Houston and SMU.
