Memphis coach Josh Pastner taunts fans in win against Louisville

Josh Pastner might be the best young head coach in all of college basketball. Still, since taking over the Memphis Tigers gig he had only won a single game against a top-25 opponent heading into their game against the Louisville Cardinals. That stat — along with his youth, I guess — is part of the reason as to why the perception of Pastner is of a guy who isn’t exactly a great on-the-court coach.

Granted, that perception is wrong — well, at least in my opinion. Regardless, Pastner and the Tigers were able to go into Louisville, get the coach’s second top-25 victory and have enough time leftover to taunt or defend his players (depending on the report you read) while interacting the opposing fanbase.

This first “report” is from a person who covers Louisville, but is also certainly a fan:

If that was it, well, you might just think it was a guy who was upset that his team lost. Alas, there were more reporting on the situation:

Louisville fans were apparently having none of Pastner’s tomfullery and responded. Which, of course, garnered a response from Josh Pastner:

Depending on your allegiances, either Josh Pastner is an immature, cocky and lucky coach or he was just having some fun and/or defending his guys. Really, however, it doesn’t really matter as the situation was downplayed to a major degree after the game and no major outlets have reported on it (at least not yet).

Pastner still has a long way to go in proving the doubters wrong. Having to play in the AAC, even if winning the league, doesn’t do him any favors. It seems like only an NCAA Tournament run will help him shush some of the talking-heads.

For me, if I were founding a college (and why the hell would I do that?!), Pastner would be my first hire. Considering his youth, recruiting skills and the fact that he still has plenty of time to grow as a coach, Josh Pastner is a rising star in college basketball.
