Northwestern upsets mind boggling Wisconsin

There might not have been a team that was as oddly exciting as the Wisconsin Badgers to start the year. The Badgers have long been known as a team who rather circle the wagons than score buckets in bunches, but Bo Ryan was letting these guys play. Well, he was letting them play just a little bit more, but it did result in their scoring going up as well as their entertainment value on the old picture-box.

It also resulted in Wisconsin starting the season 16-0.

Fast forward to present time and the Badgers have lost four out of their last five games. The last loss being to the Northwestern Wildcats last night.

First thing is first. Northwestern is certainly a program on the rise. At least supposedly. For the now, however, it wasn’t supposed to be all sunshine and rainbows. Even with that being said, Chris Collins not only has his team playing competitively, but they have won three out of their last five Big Ten games — which includes the victory over Wisconsin as well as wins over Illinois, Indiana and Purdue. Really, Wildcats fans should be thrilled.

As for Wisconsin, well, this feels a little bit foreboding. It was just a few weeks ago that they were everyone’s favorite Final Four pick. Now, though, they are trending in the wrong direction. Luckily for them, it is (still) only January and there is plenty of time for Ryan to right the ship.

Who knows, maybe he will go back to circling the wagons to the point of needing new wheels or horses or whatever it is that goes with these magical wagons everyone keeps talking about.

The Badgers better be ready to bounce-back quickly. Their next game is against the Ohio State Buckeyes. I suppose my mother (and Cage the Elephant) was right, there really is no rest for the wicked.
