South Carolina freshman Shamiek Sheppard out for year with torn ACL

facebooktwitterreddit

Shamiek Sheppard is going to have to start his first year on campus with an unexpected redshirt. Unfortunately for him and the South Carolina Gamecocks, it is of the medial redshirt variety, as reports have come out that the freshman has torn his ACL and is out until at least the 2015 college basketball season.

South Carolina coach, Frank Martin, talked about the injury in a released statement:

"“We feel awful for Shamiek with his injury. He has worked so hard to put himself in position to play at South Carolina. We look forward to supporting him through his surgery and rehab this season.”"

While Shamiek Sheppard wasn’t a tippy-top recruit or anything, he could have certainly helped a South Carolina basketball team that finished second to last in the entire SEC.

Sheppard was a three-star recruit according to Rivals. A 6’6″ wing, the Fishburne Military School (Virginia) standout committed to South Carolina in March and was in a position to possibly earn some minutes with the team this year.

Again, no need to panic if you are a Gamecocks fan, as they are still bringing in some heavy hitters as far as recruits go, with four-star point guard Marcus Stroman and three-star prospects TeMarcus Blanton as well as James Thompson still joining the team in full strength.
