Updating the Way-Too-Early Top 25: The Busting Brackets “Kinda Early Top 25”

facebooktwitterreddit

College basketball writers never waste time when it comes to producing projections for the upcoming college basketball season. Busting Brackets waited about a week after the NCAA Tournament to release it’s first Top 25 ranking for the upcoming season…only to find out that we were about six days late to the party. Our sporting culture is enamored with baseless prognostication, and despite the fact that we are a couple of months away from any of these teams taking the floor for a real practice, we’re going to give the people what they want — an updated version of our Way-Too-Early Top 25. Let’s just call this one the “Kinda Early Top 25” instead.

*Last week’s ranking refers to the team’s ranking in the Way-Too-Early Top 25.

THE REST OF THE TOP 25

More from NCAA Basketball News

11. North Carolina State Wolfpack
Dropped out of the top ten after losing Trevor Lacey, despite the addition of Maverick Rowan.
12. Villanova Wildcats
Moved up two spots thanks to Jalen Brunson’s solid summer with the USA U18 team.
13. Cal Golden Bears
Added two top ten prospects since the last rankings were released (Ivan Rabb and Jaylen Brown)
14. Indiana Hoosiers
Dropped two spots after losing two players due to dismissal (Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Devin Davis)
15. Michigan Wolverines
No news is good news in Ann Arbor. Star guards Derrick Walton and Caris LeVert are still on track to be healthy in time for the opener.
16. Baylor Bears
Big summers from incoming freshmen King McClure and Taurean Prince (who represented the U.S. at the Pan-Am Games) has Baylor looking poised to be a nuisance in the Big 12.
17. Purdue Boilermakers
The Boilers now have an embarrassment of riches in their frontcourt after the addition of McDonald’s All-American Caleb Swanigan.
18. Gonzaga Bulldogs
Much like Purdue, the Bulldogs are loaded in the frontcourt, but leave more to be desired from their guard spots.
19. Vanderbilt Commodores
Vandy is becoming a trendy pick as this year’s breakout team in college basketball. They can shoot from the outside, and they have a bonafide pro protecting the rim (Damian Jones).
20. Utah Utes
The Utes have tons returning, but I think we may be underestimating the impact that will be felt from losing Delon Wright.
21. Miami FL Hurricanes
The Canes didn’t do anything wrong this summer, but dropped due to some noticeable improvements from other programs.
22. Texas A&M Aggies
The team is really young, but very talented. It may be a year too early to have them in the top 25, but I’m very impressed with their class of incoming freshman.
23. LSU Tigers
The Bayou Bengals landed a monster recruiting class, and if not for the early defections of Jordan Mickey and Jarell Martin, LSU would be ranked number one.
24. Butler Bulldogs
I’m done trying to figure out how the Bulldogs are so good every year. I just throw them on the back end of my top 25, and enjoy being right.
25. Texas Longhorns
Shaka Smart doesn’t quite have the pieces to install his HAVOC defense at full throttle, but there’s still plenty of talent for him to work magic with.
