Iowa State basketball faced a tall test when they hosted Kansas on Monday evening.

Few things are as exciting as Iowa State basketball when they face Kansas on Big Monday. This year was no exception as the Jayhawks visited Hilton Coliseum and Hilton Magic. The Big 12 battle was entertaining, but Kansas took a hard-fought victory over the Cyclones, 76-72.

Kansas jumped out to an early lead that would grow to 10 points. Kansas’ front court has been sporadic for much of the year, but it was more than enough to body up the undersized Cyclones.

Iowa State would fight back and keep the score close despite going just 3-of-12 from deep in the first 20 minutes. KU entered the break up 43-37, while shooting 19-of-31 from the field. Frank Mason III led a balanced Jayhawk attack, but Deonte Burton led all scorers with 13 points. Kansas dominated the early rebounding totals 20-9, but also had 11 turnovers compared to the Cyclones’ six.

The second half saw much of the same as Kansas pounded it inside and ISU tried to space the floor. The Cyclones would cut the lead to four several times, but couldn’t seem to get over the hump due to untimely turnovers or missed shots.

ISU cut the game to three with less than 30 seconds left, but Kansas’ sheer dominance inside would ultimately win out in the close victory.

Mason led the winning effort with 16 points and six rebounds. He got help from Landen Lucas’ 14 and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk’s 13. Monte Morris led all scorers with 23 points, along with seven rebounds and seven assists. Burton had 21 and Naz Mitrou-Long had 18 for the Cyclones.
