Notre Dame coach Mike Brey’s hard work on the recruiting trail has paid big dividends as the Fighting Irish secured their third 2018 recruit in Dane Goodwin.

Notre Dame got a big recruiting coup, late Wednesday night when consensus 2018 top-150 prospect Dane Goodwin committed to the Fighting Irish. The former Ohio State commit was in South Bend on a visit when he decided that Notre Dame was the place for him.

"“I look at it like people are the most important thing to me, and all of the people at Notre Dame are top notch people. Also the academics are as good as it gets. Definitely the basketball program is one of the best. They went to back to back Elite Eight’s, and just have had a lot of success.”"

Goodwin appears to an excellent fit for Brey’s guard-oriented system.  The 6’4″ sharpshooter has the ability to score from any spot on the floor along. He is quick enough off the dribble to get the hole as well as bury triples after coming off a screen. He can post up smaller defenders and has deep range on his jumper.

Here is ESPN Insiders scouting report on Goodwin:

"“Dane sees the floor very well and really can create for others when teams key on him. He has shown the ability to take over games in a highly competitive environment and has refined his game to show versatility in how he scores. Sneaky athletic and plays above the rim when he wants to. Rebounds very well in a crowded lane. High basketball IQ.”"

Goodwin averaged 25.3 points a game while leading Upper Arlington to the OHSAA Division I Regional semifinal this past season.  Goodwin scored in double figures in 24 of 25 games in 2016-17. He topped the 20-point plateau 20 times and dumped in 30 or more points on nine occasions. He pumped in a season-high 43 points in an OHSAA district semifinal game against Northland on March 8.

Goodwin chose Notre Dame over Ohio State and Villanova.

Four-star guards Prentiss Hubb and Robby Carmody are also part of Notre Dame’s 2018 recruiting class. In addition, the Irish added Connecticut transfer Juwan Durham. The 6’11” power forward, who must sit out the 2017-18 season, will have three years of eligibility left.

As it stands now, Notre Dame has three more scholarships available in 2018. The Irish are expected to make the front court a priority going forward. The Irish will lose undersized power forwards Bonzie Colson and Austin Torres as well as 6’10” Martinas Geben to graduation after the season. Starting point guard Matt Farrell will also have exhausted his eligibility.
