Butler basketball struggled against Detroit Mercy’s zone but still managed to walk away with a convincing home win. What were some of the biggest takeaways?

Only two teams in the nation have won more consecutive home non-conference games in the country than Butler basketball (45): Duke and Arizona. This streak dates back to the 2012 CBI and that is some elite company to be involved in. Against Detroit Mercy, Butler basketball kept this streak intact thanks to superb all-around play from star guard Kamar Baldwin and excellent defensive play. Despite only one day of rest after taking down Miami (OH), head coach LaVall Jordan had his team ready to play once again.

Now at 2-0, Butler basketball is off to a strong start to this new campaign and they are yet to truly be tested in a close game down the stretch. These two opening games (along with a battle against Ole Miss on Nov. 16), though, will prove to be great preparation for Butler when they travel to the Bahamas to participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament later this month.

On the whole, the Dawgs struggled a bit with the Titans’ zone (evidenced by their 7-for-26 shooting from three, 26.9%) in this game but still performed admirably on both ends of the floor to come away with the 21-point win. This performance was just about as expected heading in and there were several positive (and negative) takeaways from the victory.

With all of this said, let’s dive into my three biggest takeaways from Butler basketball’s win over Detroit Mercy.
