In the 2K Classic, two former Big East powerhouses will meet to renew a fierce rivalry. Will Syracuse or UConn reign supreme in this matchup?

Even though UConn and Syracuse are no longer battling it out in Big East conference play, the two rivals have met in each of the past three (this will be the fourth straight) non-conference schedules. One of the fiercest battles of top-tier programs in the nation, this is a highly-anticipated matchup every single year. And while Syracuse has won eight of the last 11 matchups, it is never a good idea to count out UConn.

In regards to this coming matchup, the two famed programs are meeting at Madison Square Garden, the home of their sensational six-overtime game in the 2009 Big East Tournament. This matchup comes as part of the 2K Empire Classic, one of the first true non-conference events of the year. With the new season still in its infancy, there might not be better matchup to jumpstart the emotions of two incredibly storied programs.

So far, both UConn and Syracuse boast 2-0 records and have shown no real signs of struggle. For both teams, though, this will be the first true test on the court. With this said, though, the Orange should be the clear favorite in this one as the No. 15 ranked team in the nation. Still, it is never a good idea to doubt UConn head coach Dan Hurley, who is one of the best rising stars on the sidelines.

With this said, let’s dive into three major storylines to follow throughout this matchup. (All statistics found via Sports-Reference and KenPom.)
