Marquette basketball just made a big splash, as four-star prospect Symir Torrence has elected to suit up for the Golden Eagles.

Symir Torrence, a four-star combo guard and a top-100 player in the class of 2020, will play his collegiate ball for Marquette out of the Big East Conference. Well-regarded recruiting analyst Evan Daniels first reported Torrence’s decision on Sunday afternoon, with Torrence himself confirming this development via his Twitter page.

The 6-foot-3 Torrence, a native of Syracuse, N.Y., is presently a junior at the Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt. He held scholarship offers from numerous high-level teams, including Syracuse.

According to Daniels’ article, Torrence possessed a final three of Butler, Cincinnati and the Golden Eagles. Marquette (12-3), currently No. 21 in the most recent AP top-25 poll, is getting a top-flight talent in its inaugural recruit of the 2020 class.

Nationally, Torrence is rated 48th at Rivals.com, and he’s also slotted 51st by the 247Sports Composite. Over the past few months, he’s jumped up in the rankings on both of these recruiting websites.

From what I’ve read about Torrence online, he’s got a solid frame, passes with precision, drives to the basket well, is strong on defense, and continues to work on his shooting. Torrence said in the Daniels piece that the background of Golden Eagles head coach Steve Wojciechowski contributed to him selecting Marquette.

Wojciechowski, as a point guard during his senior season at Duke, received the NABC Defensive Player of the Year award. After his playing days, Wojciechowski served as a long-time assistant coach with the Blue Devils dating back to the 1999-2000 campaign. He helped guide Duke to NCAA Tournament championships in 2001 and 2010 before Wojciechowski took the helm with the Golden Eagles five years ago.

“The fact that he just came from a good program, he knows a lot,” Torrence told Daniels about his future head coach. “He knows the game very well. He was also a point guard, so just learning from a head coach that’s a point guard was a big factor in wanting to go to Marquette.”

In securing Torrence’s services, the Golden Eagles seem to have kicked off their 2020 recruiting class on a positive note, and it will prove interesting to see what other prospects opt to join him in Milwaukee.
