Butler basketball recently suffered its first loss of Big East play by dropping a home game to Seton Hall. What did we learn from the game?

Butler basketball dropped its second game of the season on Jan. 15th by falling at home to nationally-ranked Seton Hall. Despite holding a 10-point lead at halftime in Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Dawgs were unable to overcome foul trouble and sensational pick-and-roll offense from the Pirates to take the victory. Butler had its chances down the stretch of the game but wound up falling by eight points (78-70). This pushed the Dawgs to No. 7 in the NET and KenPom rankings and the team’s record is down to 15-2 (3-1 BE).

Seton Hall was led on the night by Myles Powell (29 points), Romaro Gill (17 points, 3 blocks), and Quincy McKnight (11 points, 13 assists). Gill was perhaps the most disruptive of the trio, though, as he dominated the game on both ends of the floor with his size, length, and athleticism. Butler had a hard time matching up with him and losing Aaron Thompson to foul trouble allowed Seton Hall’s guards to get going a bit more in the second half as well.

For Butler, Kamar Baldwin posted 19 points (7-for-14 FG) while Jordan Tucker supplied a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. They were easily the top two performers of the game for the Dawgs and carried the team for long stretches. Sean McDermott was also able to chip in 11 points (4-for-12 FG) but in easily his most inefficient game of the season.

Now that the game is complete, let’s take a deeper dive to analyze some key takeaways from the defeat.
