Georgetown leading guard Mac McClung has decided to enter the NCAA Basketball transfer portal. Which teams should be in play for the former Hoya?

There have been plenty of names who have entered the NCAA Basketball transfer portal but none as surprising as Mac McClung of the Georgetown Hoyas. He originally had entered the NBA Draft and signed with a legal agent, showing how serious he was going through the process. He ultimately made the decision to return to college but in a turnaround move, went straight to the portal.

It was a tumultuous season overall for the Hoyas, having a number of players leave mid-season. McClung took the team on his back during several games afterward, including a 33-point effort against Oklahoma State. He had five other games of at least 20 points before injuries limited the guard to just one game after injuries derailed the rest of the season. As expected, Georgetown fell apart towards the end.

It was a good season overall for McClung when healthy, averaging 15.7 ppg and 2.4 apg. The efficiency took a hit (39% from the field and 32% from three-point range) but considering at times he was the lone real offensive threat on the court, the sophomore did well in the circumstances. He shredded the label of just being a high-flying dunker and proved he can be an important playmaker on a power conference program.

Now in the portal, there are, and have been a ton of programs already after the volume scorer. The one holdup though is whether he’ll be granted a waiver for next season or have to sit out a year. The Georgetown Basketball program has been in disarray in the last few months but McClung wasn’t ran out or suffered a coaching change. And don’t expect star power to play a role, as both Joey and Sam Hauser from Marquette sat out this past season.

Usually, with transfer pieces, I present a list of teams that should be involved with the player in question. But with high-profile programs likely to be involved, I decided to split it up into those who should take McClung for next season, as well as those who should target him as a “sit out” transfer. Starting with him being view as “eligible” here are the teams the former Hoya should look towards.
