After lighting up college basketball last season, San Diego State Basketball returns plenty of production along with some new faces in 2020-21.

A bonafide #1 seed and favorite to reach the NCAA tournament’s latter stages last season, San Diego State Basketball one of the hardest teams hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. With a program-record year practically wasted, head coach Brian Dutcher is now tasked with replacing three of his top six scorers from last season in the Mountain West.

That includes Player of the Year in guard Malachi Flynn as well as forward Yanni Wetzel and guard KJ Feigel who declared for the NBA draft and graduated respectively.

Despite this difficult situation, the Aztecs return a trio of players who started games from last season and are still well situated to return to the NCAA Tournament and make a run when they get there. Still boasting the kind of depth that won them 30 basketball games last season, Dutcher has eight returners who are expected to play major minutes this coming year.

In addition to a cache of veterans, the Aztecs welcome the Mountain West’s second-best recruiting class according to 247 Sports. With a triplet of three-star recruits coming to San Diego headlined by 6’6 Small Forward Che Evans who is expected to make an impact against collegiate opponents from day one.

One of the perennial powers in the Mountain West — one of the sport’s best mid-major conferences —  here’s a preview of how the Aztecs might line up when the 2020-21 college basketball season officially tips off.
