Duke Basketball: Blue Devils in the 2017 Summer League
By Stuart Gill
Matt Jones, Houston Rockets
Matt Jones will join a Houston Rockets summer league team that is sending 14 players to compete in Las Vegas, including four players who were members of their NBA roster last season. With that being said, nine of his teammates are forwards or centers with Georgetown’s LJ Peak being the only other listed shooting guard. Jones averaged 6.4 points in his career as a Blue Devil, helping the team bring home the 2015 National Championship.
With James Harden, Chris Paul and Eric Gordon, the Rockets have no apparent need at the guard spot, but they will need guys who can shoot from distance on their Summer League roster in order to allow their bigs to go to work. Jones fits that mold, and if he plays well enough, could earn himself an opportunity to compete for a spot on a team that could make more use of his talents at the NBA level.
Jones will be active at on NBA.tv as the Rockets take on the Cavaliers. The game will take place at Cox Pavillion at 10:00 pm ET.
Next: What to expect from Duke's 2017 recruiting class
Some former Duke players may seem like long shots to make an NBA roster at this time in their careers, but that isn’t to say they shouldn’t try. The Summer League is an excellent time to show NBA teams your talents and that can sometimes net players opportunities. Another former Duke Blue Devil, Seth Curry, has been phenomenal in past seasons during the Summer League and because of that and his play during the NBA season, he has emerged as a solid shooting guard.
