Big 12 Basketball: Who is the 2017-18 star player on each team in the conference?
Baylor Bears – Manu Lecomte
12.2 ppg, 3.8 apg, 41 3P% (71 makes)
Manu Lecomte narrowly beats out Jo Lual-Acuil for Baylor’s best player. Lecomte started his career at Miami before transferring to Baylor, where he immediately joined the starting lineup and made a huge impact. The 5’11″ guard does most of his damage from beyond the three-point arc, but he can also attack the basket and finish over bigger players with an assortment of runners and floaters.
Lecomte took many shots in high-leverage situations even though Baylor had Johnathan Motley, who now plays for the Dallas Mavericks. Expect Lecomte to be given similar offensive responsibilities in his senior season. The diminutive guard could lead Baylor in both scoring and assists, which would solidify his standing as the team’s best player.
While Baylor will not be as good as they were last season, the Bears still have enough talent to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. If the Bears can reach the tournament, Lecomte could earn First Team All-Big 12 honors, although the second team seems more likely. Nevertheless, expect a strong season from Lecomte and a return trip to the Big Dance. 15 ppg and 4-5 apg are very realistic numbers for Lecomte as he is now the unquestioned offensive leader.
