WAC basketball: 2017-18 power rankings
6. Chicago State Cougars
2016-17 season result: 6-26 (1-13) – No postseason
Finishing third to last might seem awful for a lot of programs, but, considering the state of their athletics both on and off the field, it’s at least a step in the right direction.
Head coach Tracy Dildy is actually the longest-tenured coach in this conference coming into his seventh year with the program. He gets to coach arguably the best overall player in the conference in Fred Sims Jr.
While his team’s play may not warrant him consideration for Player of the Year, he’s the likeliest guy to have a long pro career. If he can get any help from his teammates then he might will this team to a top half spot.
5. Seattle Redhawks
2016-17 season result: 13-17 (5-9) – No postseason
Although the Redhawks lost their top scorer from last season, they get back their 7’3 British import Aaron Menzies from a knee injury. It remains to see how well he recovers considering his size, but he could be a huge presence down inside in the conference.
The issue for Seattle will be how will they score this year. They finished next to last in total scoring and currently lack the playmakers to change it.
Jim Hayford is in his first year in the program and hopes to tap the rich fertile ground of the Seattle area. In order to do that, he must turn the program into perennial contenders in the WAC. This will be year one of that mission.
