Big 12 Basketball: Midseason recap, awards, and observations
First-team All-Big 12
FR Trae Young – Guard, Oklahoma
2017-18 stats: 30.3 ppg 4.2 rpg 9.6 apg
A likely unanimous selection for the real awards, he’s been the star of college basketball, leading the country in both points and assists per game. He’s already broken a number of conference records halfway through, so expect a few more to go down.
SR Devonte’ Graham – Guard, Kansas
2017-18 stats: 17.8 ppg 3.8 rpg 7.4 apg
Remember Frank Mason? Well, it seems like Graham was waiting for him to leave so he can make his own mark. In the Jayhawks surge to the top, it’s been the experience and leadership of this senior that’s led the way.
SR Jevon Carter – Guard, West Virginia
2017-18 stats: 16.9 ppg 5.2 rpg 6.5 apg
For Mountaineer fans, I could make the argument that Carter is the third best point guard in this conference, and also the third best point guard in the country. His defense is unbelievable and his offense has grown to the point where a 20-point triple-double is likely coming soon.
JR Barry Brown – Guard, Kansas State
2017-18 stats: 17.8 ppg 2.8 rpg 3.5 apg
This could be the smallest All-Conference team in the country, but this is such a point guard dominated league that my hands were tied in this case. Brown wouldn’t have even been anywhere near this list until the injury to starting point guard Kamau Stokes. He went from a good player to a great one, scoring nearly 40 points a few times in the past couple of weeks. His play has made the Wildcats a tournament threat.
SR Svi Mykhailiuk – Forward, Kansas
2017-18 stats: 16.5 ppg 3.9 rpg 2.9 apg
There really are some really talented frontcourt players in the Big 12, but the impact players are the guards. But the senior from Ukraine has been the most consistent scorer for the Jayhawks, coming up big in the huge games early on.
Player of the Year – Trae Young – Oklahoma
