What went well: Athleticism

Just watch this play.

The kid has absolutely no idea what he is doing, but man is it awesome to watch. He goes behind the back off an inbounds pass and then tries to cram it from outside the restricted circle. He was fouled and missed, but the point stands. If Wojo can somehow polish him up a bit, Marquette may have found a diamond in the rough with John.

What to improve on: Harnessing that athleticism

John tries to block literally everything that is thrown towards the rim. He connects with a few blocks, but whiffs on so many more, leaving the weak side completely exposed for an offensive rebound and a putback. He was called for a few goaltends on both ends of the floor and committed a foul once every five minutes. He sometimes over-hedges on ball screens, though he did improve in that area throughout the season.

John has a surprisingly effective post game, and his athleticism is real. Plus, it’s easier to work with high-energy guys than to try and ramp up lazier players. If John can stay just 15 percent more disciplined, Marquette could have one of the top big men in the Big East for the next three years. These next few months will be big for his development.
