ACC Basketball teams Duke and Virginia looked good in victories over the weekend, and each team was able to use different techniques to get their shooters open. Let’s take a look at Duke game-winning play and Kyle Guy’s use of screens.

Duke’s Game-Winning Play

With Zion Williamson leaving the game early due to an eye injury, Duke still managed to pull out an impressive road win at Florida St. Cam Reddish came up big with arguably his best game of the season, which included 23 points and this game winner.

Florida State’s strategy seemed to be to prevent the easy 2-pointer at all costs, as three of its players ended up right near the basket. Since the Seminoles were only up one point, it makes sense that they were anticipating a 2-point attempt, but obviously the Seminoles didn’t plan on leaving Reddish wide open.

#14 Terrance Mann started out on Reddish, but then picked up Jack White as he started to move towards the basket. #3 Trent Forrest seemed to have been instructed to camp in the paint, likely to avoid a lob or cut to the basket. Marques Bolden’s screen for RJ Barrett and subsequent cut to the basket drew a lot of attention from the defense. Both #25 Mfiondu Kabengele and Forrest tried to account for Bolden, and Barrett’s cut to the corner left Reddish with an abundance of room to catch and shoot.

If Reddish can ride this momentum and elevate his level of play, it could take Duke to a whole new level.

Kyle Guy Running Off Screens

Virginia runs a lot of its players off screens, and Kyle Guy might be the best in the country at using a screen to get an open look, and ultimately knocking down the shot. Below, the defender chases Guy around the outside of the screen and…swish.

A little later in the game, Guy gets set to run around a Jack Salt screen. This time, however, he fakes to the outside and takes the inside route to the 3-point line. This catches the defender off-guard, and Guy uses precise footwork to catch and square up for the shot.

One more thing on Virginia…

I didn’t know De’Andre Hunter had this in his game…wowza….Along with this dribbling ability, Hunter has shown the capacity to hit the outside shot as well. Although a limited number of attempts, the sophomore has hit 15-34 (44%) of his threes on the season.

Virginia’s always been known for its defense, which remains very strong this season. But the Cavaliers also have one of their best offenses under Tony Bennett, and a lot of it is due to the team’s 39.8% 3-point shooting % (12th in the country). This could be the reason the Cavaliers finally break through in March.
