17. North Carolina Tar Heels

Record: 12-4 (2-1 ACC)

Last Week: No. 14

Just when we thought North Carolina had turned a corner following four straight wins, (including a road victory over NC State) they had to post a head-scratching performance against Louisville. Despite playing in front of their home crowd, the Tar Heels would thoroughly embarrassed seemingly from the opening tip, falling by 21 points to the Cardinals. And while Chris Mack’s team certainly deserves a ton of credit for their efforts, Roy Williams’ squad needs to visit the film on this one and analyze what went wrong.

Simply put, this is not a team that should lose at home by 20+ points.

Looking ahead, the Tar Heels are clearly still one of the most talented teams in the nation but they are yet to completely put it together. And with a home match with Virginia Tech coming up relatively soon, UNC will hopefully iron out the wrinkles in their next two games (Notre Dame at home and Miami-FL on the road).

In my opinion, North Carolina has plenty of talent to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament and potentially compete for the national title. In order for that to happen, though, they need to find some consistency. This is a team that always seems to set the pace (zero games with less than 70 total possessions) but manages to often make more mistakes than their opponents.
