NCAA Basketball Power Rankings: Ole Miss climbs, North Carolina dips
20. Ole Miss Rebels
Record: 13-2 (3-0 SEC)
Last Week: Not Ranked
Arguably the most surprising team in the nation, Ole Miss entered this year picked to finish dead-last in the SEC. Now, though, the Rebels stand at 13-2 on the year and deserve to be in everyone’s top-25 rankings. With only two losses to quality teams (Cincinnati and Butler) and a strong collection of wins, Ole Miss has shocked the world with their play over the first 2.5 months of this season. During this past week alone, Ole Miss took down two nationally-ranked teams in Auburn (home) and Mississippi State (away) to move to 3-0 in SEC play.
In just his first year at the helm of the program, head coach Kermit Davis has done a tremendous job. It does help, of course, that he inherited a fair amount of talent. Most importantly, the dynamic backcourt duo of Breein Tyree and Terence Davis is incredibly difficult for most opponents to match up. These two are combining to average over 30 points per game and are the driving force of this highly-efficient offense.
Looking ahead, Ole Miss will play three of their next four games at home and they should be able to continue rising up the rankings. The Rebels have been the Cinderella story of the Power 6 so far this season and I am definitely rooting for this team to keep rolling over their opponents. They are proving why preseason projections are just that…projections.
