19. Maryland Terrapins

Record: 14-3 (5-1 Big Ten)

Last Week: Not Ranked

Many questioned Maryland heading into conference play due to their lack of quality wins. Looking back, that made sense because the Terrapins’ best non-conference win came over Hofstra at home, but that no longer applies. Since the turn of the New Year, the Terps have won each of their last four conference games, including those over Nebraska (home), Minnesota (away), and Indiana (home). To put it simply, this team is showing exactly why they deserve to be ranked in the top-25.

Entering this season, it seemed as though head coach Mark Turgeon was firmly on the hot seat. At this point in time, though, he could easily be in the long haul thanks to how he has gotten this young team to play at such a high level. Per KenPom, Maryland is the fourth-youngest team in the nation and they should only continue to develop throughout the rest of this year. That is a scary thought.

Speaking of scary, does anyone want to match up with Bruno Fernando? Easily one of the best players in the Big Ten, the sophomore has been an absolute beast so far this year. To this point in the year, Fernando is averaging 14.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game. He also showed off his entire repertoire while dominating Indiana (25p/13r). Oh, and he is not even the leading scorer on the roster; that title belongs to junior Anthony Cowan, who is posting 17.6 points per game.
