Duke Basketball: 2018-19 keys for Blue Devils to beat rival UNC
By Zach De Jong
2. Control the offensive and defensive boards.
The Duke – Carolina rivalry has always been a physical match-up. In the past the Tar Heels were usually the more physical team that dominated the boards. But this is not the case for this years match-up. The Blue Devils who are usually a more guard oriented team – are ranked second overall in total rebounding. The Blue Devils also hang their hats on crashing the offensive boards and getting easy second-chance points.
The Blue Devils might be excellent in this aspect of the game, but that doesn’t mean the Tar Heels are bad by any means. The Tar Heels ranks 20th overall in total rebounding. However, they do not have as many physical big men down low like they did in the past. With both teams being great at rebounding, it will most likely come down to who wants it more, which could lead to some physical battles.
Both teams should have no problem bringing the intensity in fighting on the boards. Williamson will need to be the rebounding presence he has been all year. With his athletic ability to literally out jump anyone – it makes it hard to box him out when the shot goes up. Barrett has also proven lately that he grab his fair share of rebounds. The Blue Devils should be able to play bigger than the Tar Heels in both small and big lineups.
The refs might have to be on top of this one early, as the play could get physical in hurry. We wouldn’t want another Hansbrough bloody nose incident.
