Baylor Bears

Season record: 19-9 (10-5) – NET Ranking: 35

Quality wins – Iowa State (2x), Texas Tech

Bad losses – Texas Southern, Stephen F. Austin, Wichita State

From not being on the radar as an at-large candidate in the non-conference to being “safe” at this moment and time, Baylor has made a remarkable turnaround. The surprising defeats at home to Texas Southern and Stephen F. Austin aren’t the typical Quad-4 loss and Wichita State has improved themselves as of late.

Where the Bears really made their comeback was towards the start of the new year. They won seven of eight games, including over multiple teams projected to go dancing. And with 12 wins against Quad-1 or 2 teams on their resume, Scott Drew and company are now working on potential seeding.

That doesn’t mean though that those previous bad losses won’t come back to haunt them – it already has. In our latest Bracketology after the Texas comeback win, the Bears were projected as an eight seed. Other teams who have around the same number of quality wins as Baylor currently has are around the 4-5 seed range. Without those bad losses, that would be the seed range they would be placed.

There still is room for Baylor to move up to avoid a tough Round of 32 matchup. But they’re difficult contests at Kansas and Kansas State, with an inconsequential home game versus Oklahoma State in between. This is a really good team who has become top-25 quality since Big 12 play started. But due to their past digressions, an 8-9 game might be awaiting them.
