NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 2020 PG Jalen Suggs’ finalists
Gonzaga Bulldogs
After eight years of stability between Kevin Pangos and most recently Josh Perkins, Gonzaga is finally looking for a new point guard. They did land grad transfer Admon Gilder but he plays more off-ball on the perimeter. The Bulldogs have been all through the grad transfer market looking for a one-year rental ball handler, landing North Texas Ryan Woolridge after missing out on Derryck Thornton to Boston College.
So why would head coach Mark Few and the coaching staff be after just a grad transfer? That’s because they have been all-in on Suggs like no other team has. They’ve watched just about all of his games and saw him arrive for an unofficial visit against Saint Mary’s this past season. He was there with close friend and 2020 wing Julian Strawther – who later committed to Gonzaga in the Spring. He and another close friend and top-50 combo guard Dominick Harris all already part of the Bulldogs 2020 recruiting class, currently ranked No. 1.
Gonzaga has a top-15 recruiting class for this upcoming season, loaded with frontcourt players. But 2020 is about landing guards, including a star point guard. He’s said that he’ll be taken a offical visit with the program soon and are viewed as the current favorites to land him.
Of all the teams mentioned, Gonzaga has the best looking roster of the group. And with the success of the program and two close friends already on board, it’s hard to imagine Suggs opting to go to either Marquette or Minnesota. And if football is completely off the table in college, that makes him going to Spokane all the more viable. The Bulldogs have never landed a top-20 overall high school recruit before but they’ve been making a ton of history in recent years. So it would only make sense if they make some more be landing Suggs.
