The Indiana Hoosiers do not have a commit from the NCAABasketball class of 2020 yet but that could change soon.
Indiana Hoosiers coach Archie Miller has done a pretty good job at bringing in homegrown talent the past two years and could be on the verge of keeping two of the state’s top 2020 NCAA Basketball prospects in Indiana. Rivals’ Eric Bossi recently said that he believes that three-plus star shooting guard Trey Galloway will commit to the Hoosiers in the not so distant future. Galloway, who is one of the Miller’s top targets, is ranked as the fifth-best prospect in the state by 247Sports Composite and second-best by 247Sports.
Overall, 247Sports Composite lists him as a three-star prospect and ranked 182nd in the country overall while 247Sports has him as a four-star recruit and at No. 123. ESPN has the Culver (Ind.) native also a four-star recruit and No. 1 in the state. However, he has been given three stars by Rivals and is unranked in their listings.
Galloway was in Bloomington for an official visit a few weeks and spoke to Jackson Yeary of Inside the Hall on June 25 about the trip.
"“I just thought it was really cool getting to spend that amount of time with the coaching staff. I spent breakfast, lunch and dinner with them. Just getting a feel of who they are, and kind of them getting a feel of who I am. It was good to be around them and kind of talk basketball and non-basketball and see how I fit in with the program and how they think I fit in.”"
The 6-5, 200-pound wing can really shoot the ball but is at his best when attacking the rim. He also has decent athleticism, is a good rebounder and a strong defender. He averaged 16.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest as junior at Culver Academies.
While Indiana is widely considered the overwhelming favorites to obtain Galloway’s services, Iowa, Notre Dame, California-Berkeley, Cincinnati, and Georgetown are also in the mix.
Galloway said he doesn’t have any plans to take any future visits or a timetable to make a decision.
Miller has also invested a lot of time in recruiting Galloway’s good friend and travel teammate Anthony Leal. Leal, who is a Bloomington native, has been on IU’s campus a number of times over the last 12 months.
Hoosiers targeting Anthony Leal
Leal is a consensus four-star wing and a high priority for Miller. He is 247Sports and Composite’s top player in Indiana.
The 6-5 shooting guard is versatile but what he does best is shoot the 3. Leal can score on all three levels and has a knack for getting to the rim while also being able to knock down a mid-range jumper off the dribble. Additionally, he is a tough defender who has the ability to guard multiple positions.
Butler, Northwestern, Stanford, Xavier, Cincinnati are among the 10 offers that the Bloomington South product currently holds. Leal said that he will take a visit to Cincinnati sometime and hopes to make a decision before the beginning of the high school season.
Miller got a late start in the recruiting process in 2017 as he wasn’t tabbed to lead the Hoosiers until March 2017. As a result, he did not get any of Indiana’s top high school prospects. Miller did reel in three of 247Sports top four players from the state in 2018 — Romeo Langford, Damezi Anderson, and Robert Phinisee. His two 2019 recruits Trayce Jackson-Davis and Armaan Franklin rank in the top six of the state of Indiana.
IU has two roster spots available for 2019 and is reportedly currently only pursuing three-star Jordan Mitchell (Columbus, OH). However, Mitchell is expected to ultimately end up either at Florida or Ohio State.
Kerry Blackshear Jr. changing course?
Graduate transfer Kerry Blackshear Jr. has yet to make a decision despite making his last college visit a few weeks ago when he was on Kentucky’s campus. Not sure if his indecision really means anything except that he is taking his time. A decision is expected to come shortly. It is widely believed that Blackshear is choosing between Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. While it wouldn’t be shocking at this point that Blackshear chooses either the Volunteers or Razorbacks, I still believe Kentucky is the place he will ultimately end up. There are also thoughts he could end up back with Virginia Tech, however, I don’t believe that will happen.
Other recruiting tidbits:
- 6-1 junior college point guard Nick Edwards has transferred from Northwest Mississippi State to NJCAA USC Salkehatchie. He averaged 9.0 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists as a freshman. Edwards holds a DI offer from Chicago State.
- 2020 7-0 center Ryan Kalkbrenner (St. Louis, MO) received an offer from Purdue on June 25. The consensus four-star prospect is ranked in the top-100 in the class by 247Sports, 247Sports Composite and Rivals. He is still raw but possesses a lot of potential due to his length and wingspan. Kalkbrenner is athletic and can run floor and protect the rim. The Trinity Catholic product holds 16 total offers including from Pitt, Ohio State, Missouri, Stanford, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, and Illinois.
- Penn State offered 2020 four-star combo guard Niels Lane (Freehold, NJ) on June 26. The 6-5 shooting guard has now picked up an offer in each of the last three days, receiving an overture from Miami (June 25) and Pitt (June 24). He now holds 20 offers. Penn State is expected to have three scholarships available in 2020 and has 35 open offers. The Nittany Lions offered 2020 6-9 forward Elijah Taylor on June 24.
- Syracuse is believed to be the favorite to land four-star wing Andre Jackson (Albany, NY) with UConn and UCLA being the main competition for the Orange. However, SU is not expected to have any more scholarships available in 2020 after nabbing a commitment from four-star forward Woody Newton (Washington, D.C.).
