Marquette Basketball: Why MU will be better than Wisconsin in 2019-20
By Brian Foley
Recent History
I walked through the Marquette-Wisconsin rivalry last year as well, but here are the results by decade. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 67-58.
- 1910’s: Wisconsin (1-0)
- 1920’s: Wisconsin (4-1)
- 1930’s: Wisconsin (11-10)
- 1940’s: Wisconsin (16-4)
- 1950’s: Even (4-4)
- 1960’s: Even (7-7)
- 1970’s: Marquette (14-2)
- 1980’s: Even (5-5)
- 1990’s: Wisconsin (7-4)
- 2000’s: Wisconsin (6-4)
- 2010’s: Marquette (5-4)
The series has been extremely tight outside of Wisconsin’s dominance at the outset and Marquette’s run of success in the 70’s. But in the Wojciechowski era, MU has fared quite well against Wisconsin, going 3-2 against the Badgers in Wojo’s first five seasons, including wins in three of the last four meetings and two straight at the Kohl Center. All small sample size caveats apply here, but Marquette has had no problem squaring off against its chief rival, especially on the road. Wojciechowski is the first Marquette coach to win his first two road games against Wisconsin since the legendary Al McGuire knocked off the Badgers in Madison in 1965 and 1967.
Marquette and Wisconsin could both be back in the NCAA tournament looking to avenge the beatdowns of this past spring, but MU’s star power, guard depth, and higher-variance role players make the Golden Eagles more likely to record an impactful 2019-20 campaign.
