UNC’s Brandon Robinson in line for an increased role

Brandon Robinson came to Chapel Hill four years ago as a highly touted top-65 recruit. However, the 6-5 guard has yet to carve out a role for the Tar Heels. But that should change this season with UNC losing all five of their starters and 88.1% of their 312 3-pointers from last season. The Heels cupboard, of course, is not bare as they brought in the nation’s No. 9 2019 recruiting class — which included five-star recruits Armando Bacot and Cole Anthony along with transfers Justin Pierce and Christian Keeling.

Robinson is projected to have a major role this season, mainly due to his  3-point shooting, although he is also underrated as a passer as well as a defender. The Douglasville (GA) native compiled 3.4 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists as he saw just over 11 minutes a game (or 28.7% of the total minutes available) last year. He averaged only 2.4 shots a game but made 49.4% of the attempts overall and 46.0% of his long-range attempts (23-50). His 129.1 offensive rating, 62.9% effective shooting percentage, and 63.3% true shooting percentage was well above the nation’s average.

“I think I can get my percentage even higher,” Robinson told Adam Lucas of GoHeels.com. “Shooting more shots isn’t going to change my mechanics. I don’t have to do anything different. If I step outside myself, I’ll fail. I want to play within the offense, and the more I’m out there, the more productive I will be.”

Robinson will likely either start at small forward or be one of the team’s top options off the bench.
