Pac-12 Basketball: 2019-20 power rankings Feast Week edition
By Connor Hope
10) Utah Utes
Preseason Ranking: 10
Record: 4-2
Notable Results: 79-57 Road Loss vs Coastal Carolina
Utah’s first three weeks have been a crazy roller coaster ride of extreme highs and terrible lows, and it is difficult to determine who the real Utes are. Just 13 days after recording the widest margin of victory between two DI schools, the Utes went on the road and got blown out by Coastal Carolina. Add a lost to Tulane in Myrtle Beach and the strong start has come to an incredible halt.
All is not lost for the young roster as they should improve as the season progresses. With their three returning sophomores all playing extremely well and Rylan Jones playing like a star freshman, the Utes will need one or two more players to truly step up to become a solid challenge in the middle of the Pac-12.
9) UCLA Bruins
Preseason Ranking: 7
Record: 4-2
Notable Result: 88-78 Home Loss vs Hofstra
This past Thursday was an awful one for the Pac-12, and no team came away more frustrated than Mick Cronin’s UCLA Bruins. After a promising start to the year, the Bruins fell at home to Hofstra, a game that can’t be lost if you are a team looking to earn an NCAA Tournament bid out of the Pac-12.
While Jalen Hill, Chris Smith and Cody Riley have solid for the Bruins, the rest of the roster has left a lot to be desired in terms of efficiency. It is difficult to determine what will help the Bruins stay afloat in the tough Pac-12 this season, but a return of Shareef O’Neal to full availability may be necessary. The fact that this team of Top 100 recruits got run out of the gym by a BYU team without its best player just goes to show how far the Bruins have to go if they aim to have any argument for a postseason appearance.
