Pac-12 Basketball: 2019-20 power rankings Feast Week edition
By Connor Hope
6) Stanford Cardinal
Preseason Ranking: 9
Record: 6-0
Notable Results: 82-64 Home Win vs Santa Clara
It is impossible to deny how well Stanford has been playing this season, after last night’s impressive win over Oklahoma. The game against the Sooners was the Cardinal’s first true test of the year, and will hopefully set the tone for the Cardinal moving forward. As expected, Oscar Da Silva has established himself as the team’s top player and Tyrell Terry is stepping into the point guard role nicely.
One somewhat surprising development is Daejon Davis’ limited usage, despite having an extremely efficient start to the year. One would expect a 58% shooter to average more than six shots per game, especially after making 87.5 % of his threes, but Davis is shooting nearly three fewer shots per game than he did last year. However, with their win over Oklahoma, I am sure Coach Haase couldn’t be happier with his team’s performance thus far.
5) USC Trojans
Preseason Ranking: 5
Record: 5-1
Notable Result: 70-61 Home Loss vs Temple
I get it, the Trojans have not necessarily been pretty through the first three weeks of the season, but they have also looked better than past Andy Enfield teams. Between Onyeka Okongwu, Nick Rakocevic and Isaiah Mobley, the USC frontcourt has certainly done its part to keep this team afloat. While the guard play hasn’t been great, Ethan Anderson has filled the point guard spot nicely, answering one of the biggest concerns entering the season.
USC will have a chance this week to dispel some of the doubts, as they will play either Davidson or Marquette and possibly a second tournament-caliber team as part of the Orlando Invitational. Shooting efficiency has been a huge issue for the Trojans, but we should see if they can improve upon that by the beginning of Pac-12 play.
