Winner – Oklahoma State (7-0)

  • Feast Week record: 2-0
  • Beat Syracuse, 86-72
  • Beat Ole Miss, 78-37

The Cowboys were a trendy pick to be Top 25-good before the season started. They’re making good on that potential by putting together an impressive winning streak to start the year. Prior to last week, OSU’s best win was against Yale. But now Oklahoma State can call back on wins against other high-major teams. The Rebels were coming off a win over a promising Penn State team before the Cowboys slaughtered them.

Sophomores Isaac Likekele and Yor Anei have taken big steps forward for head coach Mike Boynton. Put that together with the experienced trio of Lindy Waters, Thomas Dziagwa, and Cameron McGriff, and it’s starting to look like Oklahoma State could be well on their way to their first NCAA Tournament appearance under Boynton.

Loser – Georgia (4-2)

  • Feast Week record: 1-2
  • Lost to Dayton, 80-61
  • Lost to Michigan State, 93-85
  • Beat Chaminade, 80-77

Another Maui Invitational also-ran, Georgia failed to impress over the holiday break. It’s hard to be too down on Georgia, seeing as they lost to the preseason #1 team and another squad on the rise. But it’s also hard to be too high on them after the highlight of their week was a buzzer-beater shot from Anthony Edwards against non-Division I school Chaminade to avoid going 0-for-3 in Maui.

The nice thing for Georgia is that Edwards certainly looks like a star in the making. The heralded freshmen went off for 37 points against Michigan State and 24 against Chaminade. But the flip side of that coin was also on display against Dayton when Edwards went just 2-for-10 and scored only six points.

Georgia’s bubble hopes were always dancing on the razor’s edge, but they needed to have a solid showing in the Maui Invitational. In the end, they go home with zero usable wins for their resume, since Chaminade is not a D-I school.
