West Region

(1) Kansas vs. (16) Stephen F. Austin

(8) Penn State vs. (9) Marquette

(4) Michigan State vs. (13) Vermont

(5) Villanova vs. (12) Louisiana Tech

(6) San Diego State vs. (11) Oklahoma/NC State

(3) Oregon vs. (14) Colgate

(7) Colorado vs. (10) Iowa

(2) Gonzaga vs. (15) Hofstra

Kansas might not be making a ton of early-season headlines but the team has simply handled its business following their opening loss to Duke. The Jayhawks have fixed their turnover issue and have secured four KenPom top-100 victories as a result. Udoka Azubuike/Devon Dotson is looking like one of the best duos in the country and head coach Bill Self appears to have another national title contender on his hands. Kansas is not quite on the same level as the other No. 1 seeds right now, but they are the best candidate to fill out the top line.

Moving further down the region, San Diego State has been a major surprise early this season. Even though Utah State was the overwhelming preseason favorite to win the Mountain West, the Aztecs have quickly emerged as a legitimate contender at the top of that league. They sit at 9-0 on the year with a trio of nice wins over BYU, Creighton, and Iowa. Malachi Flynn is arguably the nation’s best player that nobody is talking about. It’s time to get familiar with San Diego State this season.

Lastly, I also want to bring attention to Louisiana Tech. One of the more high-powered offensive units of the mid-major ranks, the Bulldogs are a team to monitor moving forward. It is unlikely that LaTech will compete for an at-large bid but they could be a very dangerous automatic selection out of the CUSA. Head coach Eric Konkol’s team is very experienced and boasts a ton of scoring balance – seven different players are averaging at least 8.5 points per game so far this season.

That concludes this bracketology projected field of 68 update for Dec. 6th. Was your favorite team able to make the cut? If not, there is still plenty of time remaining for them to make a run, so now is not the time to give up (although that depends on who your favorite team is). Check back again next week for a new field!
