NCAA Draft 2020: Biggest rising and falling stocks at end of non-conference
Falling – Cassius Winston
The engine that drives the Spartans appears to have taken a step back to begin the 2019 campaign.
This might be a critical analysis, but senior guard Cassius Winston has definitely taken a step back to start this year for the Spartans. Now, Michigan State has played a difficult schedule and Winston had to handle the tragic and unexpected passing of his brother, but still, his start has not been great.
Winston’s numbers have dipped across the board. His points per game, rebounds, and assists have all dropped as well as his shooting percentages.
It’s been concerning to see his field goal percentage (46.0 percent last season to 41.3 percent this season) and three-point percentage (39.8 percent last season to 33.8 percent this season) drop the way they have.
It’s totally understandable if Winston has more on his mind than basketball right now and that’s fair, but as a senior and a guy who might be on the outside looking in when it comes to being a draft pick, he can’t afford for his play to suffer for extended periods of time.
Winston is extremely talented and has plenty of time to figure things out, but both he and the Spartans need to see his play improve sooner rather than later.
