Arizona State Basketball Needs to Get Romello White More Involved

At this point in the season, it has become very clear that ASU isn’t a great 3-pt shooting team in spite of the talented bunch of guards they have on this team. It hasn’t stopped them from trying to rely on the 3 in games recently, but instead they have continued to neglect the player who may actually be the most reliable option they have on their offense right now.

Right now he is averaging about 12.5 points per game and doing it while shooting nearly 70% from

the field. This is all in spite of the fact that he is far from a focal point of the offense. Instead, they choose to repeatedly rely on an ineffective 3-point attack. This has now led to back to back performances where the team has been held to 56 and 60 points in losses.

If they were to work the ball inside to White (which they rarely ever do now) it would give their offense another real option to score and if he’s successful it would force the opposing defense to collapse on him. This would be a much more effective way to create good looks from 3 instead of continuing to just pass the ball around the arc until somebody decides to shoot. These clean looks at the basket would likely lead to ASU being much more effective from outside.

ASU should also be trying to find any answer they can to fix the offense right now. The most obvious answer would be to get the guy who has been by far the team’s most efficient scorer more of the ball. He might not turn into a 20 point per game player, but the way he has played this year makes it seem like he could settle into the high teens and open up more shots and cutting lanes for his teammates, making the offense much more effective overall.
