Mid-major Basketball power rankings: SDSU, BYU and Richmond make gains
15. Harvard Crimson 11-4 (0-0 in Ivy League)
The somber news of Seth Towns officially done with Harvard is confirmed, with the former Ivy League Player of the Year in the transfer portal after missing another full season with injuries. But the depth that head coach Tommy Amaker is paying off, with the Crimson currently on a six-game win streak. That included four consecutive from the road, with San Francisco and Cal among the wins. They better get to being away from the Lavietes Pavilion, with five of the first six conference games also being away from home.
14. Akron Zips 12-3 (2-0 in MAC)
There’s no trio in the MAC better than guards Loren Jackson and Tyler Cheese, along with forward Xeyrius Williams, who has become the conference frontrunner despite losing last year’s leading scorer in Daniel Utomi. They’ve beaten everyone outside of West Virginia, Liberty and Louisville this season and already have a pair of comfortable league wins against both Eastern and Western Michigan. A battle with fellow 2-0 MAC squad Ball State should be a fun matchup.
13. Louisiana Tech 11-3 (2-0 in Conference USA)
With both UTEP and South Alabama struggling, Conference USA is wide-open this season. The Bulldogs have a strong roster equipped with seven players averaging at least 8.0 ppg, while also having a top-20 scoring defense. LA Tech swept Southern Mississippi last week in a pair of games but faces tougher tests this weekend, with road bouts against Texas-San Antonio and UTEP coming up.
