AAC Basketball power rankings: Wichita State rises to the top
6. SMU Mustangs (Prior Ranking: 8)
SMU easily would have cracked the top five if it weren’t for a close loss to East Carolina, at 12-3 the Mustangs have been really solid. SMU has an astounding four guys averaging 13.5 points per game or more.
Kendric Davis the TCU transfer has been lethal this season, he’s getting to the rack and has an outside shot but it hasn’t been consistent. He’s a primary ball-handler that takes care of the basketball with only 30 turnovers in 11 games.
The Ponies have the potential to make noise but that loss to ECU has me hesitant, they’ll get Houston and Temple before a rematch with ECU. SMU is a team that the conference needs to be wary of.
5. Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (Prior Ranking: 9)
This is a weird one, If you look at Tulsa and the fact they’re 2-1 with wins against Houston and Temple and then a loss on the road to Cincinnati you probably would think that’s not bad and not think twice but the fact that loss to Cincinnati was by 31 raises a red flag.
Maybe just a really bad half of basketball for Tulsa but they’ve otherwise been very good. That Cincinnati game was four points at half time and things just went south very quickly. Just when you count them out they go ahead and knock of Houston. So how good is this Tulsa team?
At 10-6 Tulsa have lost quite a few close games this season that were winnable. Is this team better than what their record suggests or was the Houston win just part of what’s been a wild season of college basketball?
Tulsa will get East Carolina, Tulane, and Memphis in their next three games, you’d expect them to win at least two of them but who honestly knows.
