San Diego State Aztecs – 19-0 (8-0)

Current NET ranking: 2)

What a week for San Diego State! Not only did they remain unbeaten after solid wins over both Fresno State and Nevada but more importantly, Auburn finally fell on Wednesday to leave the Aztecs the only team in the country without a loss this season.

Considering how much the San Diego State fans and players have been in love with the map, it was only fitting for them to be the last team standing. But if they’re going to accomplish their new goal (landing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament), they may have to stay without a blemish in the regular season.

Wins against Iowa and Creighton have held up but both Utah and Utah State have taken major steps back since entering conference play. And with nothing but Quad-2 games at best left on the schedule, it’ll be hard for the Aztecs to make a case for the top seed in the West Region if they suffer an upset, which was looking possible after trailing the Wolf Pack at halftime this weekend.

San Diego State did hold on, thanks to their stifling defense that’ll make them favorites for every Mountain West game going forward. Malachi Flynn’s old team Washington State did the Aztecs a favor as well, knocking off Oregon last week to remove them from the discussion for the top West Region spot.

Now they need BYU or Saint Mary’s to beat Gonzaga in the next month to help buoy their argument even more. Because while both mid-majors could be No. 1 seeds, you’d rather stay out west and play in Los Angeles in the second weekend, rather than play in another region and lose the homecourt advantage.
