West Virginia Mountaineers

Remember when West Virginia was a 2 seed in the early bracket reveal? It was all downhill since, with the team losing six of seven games at one point. Losses included to Oklahoma, TCU and Texas, having them fall all the way to the 8-9 seed range.

The good news for the Mountaineers this weekend was that they were taking on another struggling Big 12 team in the Baylor Bears. The even better news is that the offense appeared out of nowhere for WVU, scoring 76 points in the 12-point upset win at home. That victory put the team at 9-9 to end the regular season and in a four-way tie for 3rd place. There’s also a pathway for the Mountaineers to see Kansas in the conference tournament finals as well, allowing them a possible high seed in the NCAA Tournament.

West Virginia’s resume is fairly top-heavy, with wins over Ohio State, Baylor and Texas Tech, buoyed by a top-3 strength of schedule and top-20 NET rankings. That’s why they’ll likely be closer to a 4 seed than an 8, even though the Mountaineers have looked like a bubble squad as of late. Let’s see if this win over the Bears can spark a run for West Virginia looking like a second-weekend team once again.
